The Eastern Marketplace
Spurred by wonderful memories of fresh jam simmering in the kitchen of her childhood home in Armenia, Sylvia Tirakian founded Harvest Song. Her New York-based specialty-foods company, which she create with exotic-carpet importer James Tufenkian, makes preserves with fresh, natural Armenian produce. (In Armenia, the fruit is picked by hand, prepared in small batches, and immediately preserved in vacuum-sealed glass containers to retain the taste and nutrients.) Flavors include Tea-Rose Petal, Apple and Pear, Golden Fig, and Baby Walnut, and they're delicious paired with breads or cheeses (an absolute must-try is Apricot with Parmigiano-Reggiano). Harvest Song preserves sell for $7 to $10 at several New York City and New Jersey retailers, including Westside Market, Chelsea Market, and Maywood Market. (516.773.7356; harvestsongventures.com)
