Preserved walnuts a tasty nibble
Harvest Song’s preserved fresh walnuts ($8 to $14 for 18.9 ounces) are picked green in the Ararat Valley of Armenia and preserved with their shells in sugar syrup and lemon juice. They look like black olives and are sweet and moist with a slight crunch. The baby walnuts, from a company that specializes in Armenian preserves, have an enticing taste that bears little resemblance to other condiments. Slice them thinly for a cheese platter (they’re delicious as a contrast to Stilton or other blues) or serve with pate. Nibble one for dessert, or as the company suggests, use a whole sweet walnut to garnish a bourbon cocktail, like a Manhattan. The flavors merge into something wonderful. Available at Bacco’s Wine + Cheese, 31 St. James Ave., Boston, 617-574-1751; Central Bottle Wine + Provisions, 196 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 617-225-0040; The Cheese Shop, 29 Walden St., Concord, 978-369-5778; Pecorino, A Country Cheese Shop, 135 Westboro Rd., North Grafton, 508-839-9200.
